Bibliographic key

The purpose of this bibliography is to identify and locate the existence of works produced through the centuries on the art and sport of fencing. With many of the rare books and manuscripts in the hands of private collectors and library collections located around the world, it was not practical to examine each listing first hand, and as such, it was not possible to produce an annotated bibliography. However, all efforts were made to list as much information per entry that could be found in specific databases or collection listings that described the entries. In this bibliography author, title, country and date of publication and number of pages are the thematic reference points. Secondary information that was considered was whether the particular entry was illustrated or not, could be located, and if so where, and whether or not the entry had been catalogued in previous bibliographies produced on the subject.

How to use this bibliography

To facilitate the use of this bibliography all entries are numbered and are listed alphabetically by the author’s last name. If the author produced more than one publication the entries are listed in numeric order staring from the earliest publishing date to the latest. In the case where multiple publications have been produced by an author in the same year the entries are listed in alphabetical order by title. Some entries may have more than one author, and these entries are listed first by the author that appeared initially on a cover or in a catalogue description. Subsequent authors are listed in the order they were found after the first author.
